Derrick Parson
The VA Conference Youth Coordinator
Derrick will lead a workshop for the primary, hands-on youth leader from each of our churches that has one, both volunteer and paid.
He will focus on practical ways to get wider participation from more of our churches so that a stronger sense of district identity and ownership can emerge from more of our youth and their leaders. He will be offering us some preparatory materials to help us get our heads and hearts ready for what God can do among the youth in our York River churches.
Youth: tell your Youth Leaders and get them on board for this exciting training event.
Thanks
Frannie and Walt.
We are so excited about the first year of the York River District Youth Choir. The former Rappahannock District Youth Choir has been serving in mission in this capacity for 20 years. The group will begin its mission week on Monday evening, June 25th in Gloucester VA. The trip will conclude after the final evening concert on Sunday, July 1st. The group will be staying and performing mission work in Gloucester County. Mornings are filled with mission. After showers and lunch, afternoons and evenings are spent in small group study, choir practice, and worship. You do NOT need to be able to read music or even sing well. God does great things with willing hearts.
The cost of the trip is $150.00. A completed application and $50.00 deposit will need to be returned to Nona Merrill no later than June 1st. Application is available here.
This is a unique opportunity for those churches who have trouble securing adult chaperones to attend mission outreach events with their youth members. We have a complete Adult Staff already trained and ready to lead the event. We are just waiting to welcome your kids.
Any questions can be directed to Nona at 804-815-3567.
Thank you,

As I have traveled the conference, I have noticed a shift in leadership for the youth in many of our churches. Parents and volunteers have stepped forward for the daunting, yet joyful, task of leading our young people to Christ. However, those leaders find themselves feeling inadequate. Why? Volunteers and youth workers have not had the benefit of study (seminary) so as to understand Youth Ministry and Youth Culture. In taking the challenge, we The United Methodist Virginia Conference are specifically addressing this issue by creating our very own retreat for Youth Pastors and Youth Workers which is entitled, "Finding Your Own Way!" This retreat will take place at Eagle Eyrie in Lynchburg, Virginia, July 12-15, 2012. We are inviting Retreat Guru, Robert Davis, of Joplin, Missouri. Robert and his staff are coming to facilitate our learning experience. The Conference will take the first 40 people to sign up. The total cost of the retreat is $300.
We ask that each person make a $100 non-refundable deposit to secure their seat for this great adventure. The $300 dollars will include food and lodging for four days, materials, and a welcome packet. Lastly, Retreat Guru Robert Davis will take the hottest top ten topics which confront our youth and will labor with participants through working scenarios. If you want your youth pastors and or youth leaders to have this awesome experience, please visit the Conference web-page at www.vaumc.org/youth
and print out a registration form. Mail the form along with your credit card information or a $100 non-refundable check for the event to the Office of Ministries with Young People at the Virginia United Methodist Conference, P.O. Box 5606, Glen Allen, Virginia, 23058. The remaining $200 will be due by June 28, 2012. No refunds will be issued after this date.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Derrick Parson at derrickparson@vaumc.org or Becky Tate at beckytate@vaumc.org.
Grace and Peace,

The third year of Operation 757 is coming!
What is Operation 757?
-Operation 757 is local summer mission camp from Wednesday, July 25th – Sunday, July 29th at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church. We will be participating in various service projects to help those in need in the community as well as growing in our own faith and having a lot of fun while we’re at it!
What is needed: The cost is $150 per youth with a $50 deposit and the names of the youth and youth leaders due by Friday, May 18th. We ask that you provide 1 youth “leader” (chaperone) for every 4 youth as well as transportation for the people as you bring. One leaders’ $150 will be waived for every 4 youth that are signed up by your group.
The transportation will be used to transport groups to their worksites each day (Thurs-Sat).
We had a lot of fun last year with a very good turnout. The band “This is Luke” will be back this year to provide amazing music. We are anticipating a full facility, so please make your reservation today.
