Clergy Gathering - Thursday, January 18th @ 9am at Crooks Memorial UMC

204 Cook Road, Yorktown

The purpose of our ongoing gatherings is to further equip clergy to provide positive leadership in the midst of “times like these.”

Topic for Jan. 18th:  How to lead congregations to reach healthy resolution for difficult issues.

Our first hour together will give the option of 2 sessions:

1) For those who have completed the "Kraybill Conflict Style Inventory."  (During Nov's gathering OR in one of the "Transforming Conflict" Workshops OR in another setting).  This will be led by Garry Livermon.

Participants for this are asked to bring some reflections on their inventory results.  Consider:

i.) Where you are on road to perfection (collaboration)

ii.) How you can help your congregation to take the same journey

iii) How what you've learned can help you lead others in collaboration.

2) Those who have yet to complete the "Kraybill Conflict Style Inventory."  We will complete the tool and reflect upon it.  This will be led by Lisa Barbery.

Our second hour will have us all together for a discussion and exploration facilitated by Tom Tipton and Hank Teague.  This time will include several resources, thoughts, and questions as we explore how to lead congregations to reach healthy resolution in the midst of difficult issues.

Book Study:  We are inviting ALL clergy to read the book, "Anatomy of Peace."  Copies for purchase will be available on Jan. 18th or you can secure on your own.

Our Jan 18th gathering and recommended Book Study are in preparation for upcoming event(s) we are planning (for clergy and laity) that will explore how to "have the conversation" within our congregations as we approach General Conference 2019.  We are looking at a few guest speakers to be a part of these events.

BOOK EXCHANGE:  It's been suggested that at our gatherings, those wishing to pass along resources may do so at a "Book Table."  Simply bring your books and place on the table.  Items can be reviewed and taken by anyone in attendance.  However, if your item is still on the table at the end of the event we ask that you take it home with you.

Chat and Chew 2

With Bishop Sharma Lewis and the Districts of Eastern Shore, Elizabeth River, James River, and York River

Date:     Saturday, February 17, 2018

Time:     8:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Location:  Ebenezer UMC (1589 Steeple Drive, Suffolk, VA 23433)

Check in begins at 8:15 a.m. Session starts at 9:00 a.m. and concludes with lunch served at 12:30 p.m.

Guided by God's Spirit, Bishop Lewis has discerned that the emphasis for the Chat and Chew 2.0 will focus on the work of The Commission on the Way Forward regarding unity and human sexuality, allowing lay and clergy voices across the conference to engage directly in this conversation.

Questions to engage in conversations:

  1. In our diverse and global existence, what is the shared mission/purpose of the Church?
  2. Is there a proactive way for us to live together in our differences that doesn't presume that we will resolve our differences? What would it be?
  3. What might be a form of unity that would empower us living together?
  4. What is our witness and what can be our witness to the world in relation to our differences?
  5. Which voices are missing from your conversation? How will you hear them?

Registration and Lunch are free but due to space limiations at Ebenezer UMC, the event is open to the first 100 persons per District.

Child care will be provided.
